Weight loss cannot cure narcolepsy, as the condition is primarily a neurological disorder caused by a deficiency of hypocretin (orexin), a brain chemical that regulates wakefulness and REM sleep. However, for individuals with narcolepsy who are overweight or obese, losing weight may help alleviate certain related symptoms, such as excessive daytime fatigue or sleep apnea, which can worsen narcolepsy symptoms. Maintaining a healthy weight and lifestyle, including regular exercise and a balanced diet, can support overall well-being and improve energy levels but will not address the underlying cause of narcolepsy. Effective management requires specific treatments, such as wakefulness-promoting medications and behavioral strategies.
